In Guided Inquiry Design®, it’s concrete, visible, and practiced. Students gain this skill through structured experiences that connect content learning with metacognitive strategies and self-awareness.

1. Metacognitive Reflections on Process

Students are invited to pause and think about their own thinking. They write, talk, and reflect on what’s working, what’s confusing, and what’s helping them move forward. Reflection turns research into an act of self-study.

2. Strategy Awareness at Each Phase

Each phase of the inquiry process—Open, Immerse, Explore, Identify, Gather, Create, Share, Evaluate—demands different strategies. Students learn how to browse widely, how to narrow, how to persevere, how to synthesize, and more. Over time, they build a personal toolkit of learning strategies they can apply anywhere.

3. Emotional Awareness During Learning

Confusion, frustration, excitement—these are not signs of failure, but natural stages of the Information Search Process (ISP). By noticing their emotional responses and learning how to work through them, students develop resilience and confidence in themselves as learners.

4. Recognizing the Patterns of the ISP

Students come to see inquiry as a pattern. They expect the “dip” in confidence during Explore, the clarity that comes in Identify, and the momentum of Create. This recognition transforms skills into lifelong habits of mind.

5. Reflecting on the Entire Journey

At the end of an inquiry, students take time to look back over the whole process. Using prompts and creating journey maps, they surface the dips and high points, the strategies that worked, and the challenges they overcame. This practice ensures they remember not just the content, but the way they learned.


One classic student story from Carol Kuhlthau’s original ISP research captures this power. A student struggled to find a clear focus because it felt like everything was interesting, so she kept plodding along, hoping it would “work out.” When it came time to write her final paper, she realized she had nothing solid to say. “I thought I could just smush it all together,” she admitted. Without a focus, her project went nowhere.

Through guided reflection, she recognized the role that focus plays in learning, how it shapes the path, drives purposeful searching, and leads to deeper understanding.

And she learned about herself as a learner. This was evidenced In her very next inquiry, she took the early phases seriously, working through Open, Immerse, and Explore until she landed on a topic that truly interested her.

With clarity came communication and meaning. She was amazed at how much she learned, and how much easier it was to express her ideas once she had a clear focus formulated, not just a topic.
