In today’s world, it’s so easy to just keep scrolling. We skim headlines, glance at images, swipe through content, and move on. Our students live in that same stream of constant information, and often bring those same habits into the classroom.

But real learning isn’t scrolling. It requires slowing down, asking deeper questions, and taking time to build understanding.

Teachers are the designers of those learning experiences that help students to slow down and dig deep.

Guided Inquiry Design® is a framework that recognizes this role and equips educators with the knowledge and structure to design for depth, connection, and curiosity.

Inquiry Defined

“Inquiry is an approach to learning whereby students find and use a variety of sources of information and ideas to increase their understanding of a problem, topic, or issue of importance. It requires more than simply answering questions or getting a right answer. It espouses investigation, exploration, search, quest, research, pursuit, and study.
Inquiry does not stand alone. It engages, interests, and challenges students to connect their world with the curriculum. Although inquiry is thought of as an individual pursuit, it is enhanced by involvement with a community of learners, each learning from the other in social interaction.” — Kuhlthau, Maniotes, Caspari, 2007

This definition is the foundation of Guided Inquiry Design®.

Notice the key ideas: inquiry connects to the curriculum, it builds personal meaning, and it grows stronger in community. But none of this happens by chance.

It happens when teachers design for it.

Designing for More Than Answers

Too often, classroom activities push students toward quick responses, one right answer, then move on. But inquiry requires more. It asks students to become curious, investigate, explore, and pursue ideas over time.

The questions of inquiry aren’t like those we ask Siri, Alexa, Google or ChatGPT. They’re deeper. They grow from curiosity and develop with knowledge across the process. Instead of learning from a string of pre-planned standalone activities, inquiry-based learning allows students to build understanding by interacting with information, exploring, researching, and studying topics that truly matter to them.

Teachers design the scaffolds, strategies, and experiences that invite students into that pursuit and guide them along the way. Without this intentional design, inquiry can feel daunting or overwhelming. With it, students learn to persist, to wonder, and to see themselves as capable learners.

Designing for Connection

Inquiry thrives when students see connections between school learning and their own lives. As designers, teachers open those spaces, choosing topics, texts, and experiences that spark relevance and intrigue.

When students feel that relevance, they don’t just “do the assignment.” They own their learning, and it matters to them. While some call this agency, we see it as connection. Most educators know the role of intrinsic motivation in deeper learning. When students find a true focus, their motivation goes beyond the normal need to know. Their drive to learn skyrockets and they are much more able to persevere through the challenges they face, because now the learning connects to something that matters to them. And teachers can design for this deep connection.

Designing for Community

Although inquiry often looks like an individual pursuit, it’s enhanced by community. Teachers design collaborative spaces where students share resources, test ideas, and learn from each other.

When else do we get to learn in a community of care, surrounded by a variety of supportive think partners? The inquiry community creates opportunities for students to learn side-by-side, collaboratively, sharing resources and learning from each other. Even the most independent inquirers benefit from conversation, discussion, time to reflect and journal.

This mirrors the real world: scientists, historians, writers, and innovators all work in knowledge communities. The inquiry community in the K-12 classroom replicates these real-life knowledge communities, literary societies, scientific communities, historic knowledge communities who seek to understand together.

Designing for Guidance

Finally, inquiry requires guidance. Students use resources from the whole school and community for inquiry. They’re invited and welcomed to the library, guided to find information from multiple sources, not just classroom textbooks. Learning expands outward from the classroom into the whole school, community, and beyond. When schools have librarians, they become essential partners in guiding the inquiry process.

We know that the process of inquiry is a bumpy, emotional path. Without guidance and support, the interventions that go along with it, students can easily be sidetracked or even give up on deeper learning.

Teachers design interventions, use the embedded inquiry tools, and just-in-time supports, like conferences, that help students navigate these bumps without giving up. With the right design, students don’t quit when it gets hard. They lean into the process, find a personal focus, develop strategies, and grow as independent inquirers.

The Designer’s Role

When teachers see themselves as designers of learning, everything shifts. Curriculum becomes the spark for curiosity, an invitation to think differently about what’s important to teach. Designers of learning take what is necessary and find engaging entry points that are interesting and create connection.

That’s the role Guided Inquiry Design® professional development, it honors and equips. It gives teachers both the research-based framework and the practical tools to create inquiry experiences where students slow down, dig deep, and thrive.

Because inquiry isn’t scrolling. Inquiry is learning. The lack of engagement we see in classrooms today isn’t apathy, it’s a hunger for connection and depth that scrolling can never satisfy. Schools have the opportunity to feed that hunger. When educational leaders invest in teachers as designers, providing the resources and space for deep inquiry, they transform not just learning, but learners themselves.
